Holy shit. Seriously, absolutely crazy. Really came out of nowhere. Venial Blur from DN alerted me to it and it completely perked me up from what otherwise has been a very bland day.

I've only listened to it a couple of times now because I really don't want to ruin it by overplaying it, especially since I wouldn't be able even come close to calling it "catchy" by any means.

With that said, I don't think his punk inspirations have ever been more evident than they are here. Very strong, very abrasive, fast. Really no nonsense assault on the ears, and I mean that in the best way possible, obviously. I cannot wait to hear the new album if for sure that is in the works. Unless this is possibly an older track??

From Huh Magainze #10 1995:

"I wanted something that would stick, and at the same time to have different levels of interpretation," he explains.  So far such interpretation has been of more interest to America Online's obscenity police than to Biblical scholars - the internet service has threatened to disconnect McMahon's publicist for using the word in news releases "I considered 'Sic,' he concludes in defense, "but there was so much more to Prick." Leaving this semantic quandary to the censors, McMahon has at least won a proud reaction from his mom, and it's one he evidently relishes.  "When she heard the single on the radio, she was going, 'This isn't tuned right! Listen to all that static !"  High parental praise for anyone in pursuit of distorted perfection.

Oh yeah, definitely an industrial metal sound, but he's always had that, even in a few Lucky Pierre tracks (albeit more subtly). But the punk attitude is definitely there, in one part it really reminds me of a Ramones riff.

This is a really nice track...
The political* nature is very different then what we've previously heard.
I'm digging it. Hard.

Congratulations on the guys here for getting this and sharing it, with any luck Kevin will consider this as a more official site when album release time comes up....

I've been a Prick/Lucky Pierre fan ever since the day I found a Prick promo flyer in an obscure clothing shop on Magazine Street (New Orleans) way back in the summer of 1994.

I am VERY GLAD to receive some news that Kevin is back on the scene.

However, I must be completely honest. Upon the first listen, I do not like "Runaway Brain". I must admit that I more partial to the industrial-sounding stuff he has done (drum machines, synthesizers, etc). So it pains me to put something negative on this message board. But, I felt compelled to be brutally honest.

This is not to say I won't listen to it. I will probably wear it out for the rest of the week. And I am very much looking forward to hearing the rest of what he has been up to.

Having said (er...typed) all that...let the flaming begin... :'(

Title: Re: Kevin McMahon Is Back!
Post by Rob on 10/29/08 at 10:55:44

No flaming :) Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and I'm glad you signed up and shared yours.

It's funny... this song for me, in a lot of ways, brings back that feeling I got from the 1995 record. Sure, it's not loaded with electronics and samples, but I don't think Kevin is that person anymore... then again, I could be wrong, as I have no idea what he's got up his sleeve, and one of the greatest things about him are his many different musical sides.

For what it is, I think "Runaway Brain" is quite an amazing track. To hear him bring on the rage/passion like he is, even still, is mind blowing for me. I figured after "ThinKing" the aggro may be gone, but clearly I was wrong, and I'm glad I was!

very astute post, sewn. thanks for saying all you did. i could not agree with you more. very glad you managed to find that article where he mentions (sic) for the first time, as well. rob & i only found that for the first time a few weeks back & were also highly amused when this track appeared under this name.

personally i think this song is fantastic. i love the cold brutality of it, but also how angry kevin is at the situation at large right now in this country. his point of view is as ever comical and biting. i too love how punk this feels and am very interested in hearing what's to come. if we know kevin, it's probably quite different from this track too. his records have such a massive variance in styles and ideas.

Wow. This song is sure an interesting departure from the earlier work I've heard. I can't help to make some Electric Eels comparison here, maybe to Kevin's dismay. I like it though, I don't believe that people have to stick to one style which they're best known for. He's always been such an interesting artist and I'm curious to see any follow-up material.

Title: Re: Kevin McMahon Is Back!
Post by p.b.a. on 10/29/08 at 14:56:16

I have to agree with Rob. In some ways, this reminds me of a more crude, political "Crack". It's actually less vague, lyrically, than the whole "Prick" album, but still very interesting.
I read somewhere (maybe on Kevin's Echoing the Sound thread) that someone felt his screaming kinda forced, but I definitely don't feel the same. It has that natural anger of Kevin's which I so adore - more like "loud/exploding feelings" than "trying to make 'heavy music'". So, yeah, I'm really liking it. I don't intend to listen to it very much though. I don't feel like spoiling the upcoming cd as I did with so many others (that is, of course, if there's REALLY a cd coming out anytime soon).

Anyways, I apologize for any grammar mistakes - I'm actually from Brasil. And also: hello to everyone! (I don't think this is the right place to say "hello", but since I'm already here and this is my first post...)

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Kevin's screaming is definitely intuitive and emocionally pragmatic, not otherwise (and, above all, not "forced" or thought over).

Also, I was a bit curious on how you, admins., were able to get hold of this track. Did Kevin the man himself contact you guys and asked if you'd upload the new track on luckyPRICK? Or maybe Tom Lash, I don't know. Just the thought of Kevin knowing about this site makes me wonder if maybe he'll try to get closer to his fanbase, or even if he'll ever agree with mp3 trading (bootlegs, old vinyls, etc).

Title: Re: Kevin McMahon Is Back!
Post by AVENPITCH on 10/30/08 at 08:39:57

What an awesome surprise!!!  The second the song starts it's like "Hey there's Kevin!" - his guitar playing is quite unique...  the bends and that tone!  The slide guitar is also pretty cool...  it sorta reminds me of The Kinks' Muswell Hillbillies record.

I'm curious to know who played on the song.  Obviously from the PlayStation reference it's gotta be a fairly recent track.  A couple vocal lines even sound like someone else (i.e. "Put Your Hands In The Air // Wave 'Em Like You Don't Care").  I'm also curious to know why he chose a different name this time out (sic) - it seems like using the Prick moniker would garner much more interest after his absence, but I'm sure he has his reasons.

Regardless - I'll take it!  Can't wait to see what surprises the crew @ Lucky Pierre Music have in store!

this is simply beautiful and entirely unexpected!

I had given up all hope of ever hearing another gem from Kevin's raging, tettering on the insane lyrics. It haunts me how it draws me in.

I really liked this song, but the more punkish turn like when the song breaks into "world doesn't... " hit me hard the first couple of times, but it grew on me..

I can only hope that Kevin, like Trent, will realize the beauty of releasing their material online.

Be nice to get a vinyl, but I didn't get into Kevin until around the release of the Wreckard.

November though! it will be an uplifting gift with the let down of yet another Nadar loss in the presidential race.

Damn, I hope Kevin throws us a bone on these lyrics like he gave ThinKing. I'm sure we're butchering these. Some of my shots:

like an ancient, pagan pig and for what?
evil, evil king of slaughter
It's a vicious cycle; Gotta get up
Yeah, I know there's less of your beauty out there

I think it's alway "gold key" in the third line of the chorus.

I can't wait to hear the rest of this shit. Guess I know what everyone's getting for Christmas   ;)

Also, 2,400 hits in three days? 800+ views on this thread thus far? New members posting?! I bet there are some very happy men out there this week.

well 10 years of anger all in one song, I guess Kev finally had a bad day.  You know he just sometimes has something to say. Loudly, not really the Ramones or the Eels or punk or metal, they always wished they were Kevin anyway.  It's just Kevin, all sound and fury, with the inevitable following silence to reflect in.  I hope he had a good time making this.

This is a late response to the song. Rob already knows how I feel on it.

I think it's a great track, and I'm very happy to hear a new(er) tune from Kevin. I wonder if this is his ode to stoner rock, if indeed he's ever even heard stoner rock. Either way, I can't help but hear this song and think, "Stoner rock/metal done Kevin McMahon style," and it's amazing. Has similarities to Kyuss and bands of the like. Distorted/fuzzy, angry, kinda bluesy, "sunny," punk aggression, etc. I really think it's an incredible track, and I can't wait to hear more material.

Hey guys, I haven't been on the board in ages. Good news about the new song/project. I would really appreciate the song if anyone is willing to share. Thanks in advance. :)

I'm still patiently waiting for luckypierremusic to change. It's almost Febuary. I think the "speed of green" is slow for everyone nowadays if that's still the issue. Someone else mentioned it awhile ago, but I'm willing to throw a little money that way if it's somehow possible (luckypierremusic setting up a paypal account maybe).

I know it's hard, but we gotta try to be patient. I'm sure something will happen soon. Maybe "green" isn't the issue... maybe they made some changes to their initial plans or something? Maybe they're coming up with new things they want to incorporate into LPM.com?

Remember when "Wet Cat" first appeared on MP3.com in 2000? There was a lull in between that & the CD release, and wasn't "The Wreckard" worth the wait ;) And then with "ThinKing", without warning, it was just there & available for sale. I'm guessing Kevin's going with his "Wreckard" model and is letting out a little sample to keep the fans happy while they work out the kinks in their operations. Whatever the situation, I know it'll be worth the wait... and hey, at least we know they're active over at LPM, which is something that couldn't be said of the past few years.

I dunno... I guess I'm just being really painfully optimistic about this. I just feel like it's gonna be a good year for LPM fans.

I'm ashamed to say that I missed downloading this new track, as well.   :'(
