Yes, you read that right. Kevin McMahon is back with a new project called "( sic )", and a blistering new politically charged song, which we have the absolute honor of debuting for all of you as a special treat for Halloween from the guys over at LPM!

Holy shit. Seriously, absolutely crazy. Really came out of nowhere. Venial Blur from DN alerted me to it and it completely perked me up from what otherwise has been a very bland day.

I've only listened to it a couple of times now because I really don't want to ruin it by overplaying it, especially since I wouldn't be able even come close to calling it "catchy" by any means.

With that said, I don't think his punk inspirations have ever been more evident than they are here. Very strong, very abrasive, fast. Really no nonsense assault on the ears, and I mean that in the best way possible, obviously. I cannot wait to hear the new album if for sure that is in the works. Unless this is possibly an older track??

"I wanted something that would stick, and at the same time to have different levels of interpretation," he explains. So far such interpretation has been of more interest to America Online's obscenity police than to Biblical scholars - the internet service has threatened to disconnect McMahon's publicist for using the word in news releases "I considered 'Sic,' he concludes in defense, "but there was so much more to Prick." Leaving this semantic quandary to the censors, McMahon has at least won a proud reaction from his mom, and it's one he evidently relishes. "When she heard the single on the radio, she was going, 'This isn't tuned right! Listen to all that static !" High parental praise for anyone in pursuit of distorted perfection.

Oh yeah, definitely an industrial metal sound, but he's always had that, even in a few Lucky Pierre tracks (albeit more subtly). But the punk attitude is definitely there, in one part it really reminds me of a Ramones riff.

The political* nature is very different then what we've previously heard.

I've been a Prick/Lucky Pierre fan ever since the day I found a Prick promo flyer in an obscure clothing shop on Magazine Street (New Orleans) way back in the summer of 1994.

I am VERY GLAD to receive some news that Kevin is back on the scene.

However, I must be completely honest. Upon the first listen, I do not like "Runaway Brain". I must admit that I more partial to the industrial-sounding stuff he has done (drum machines, synthesizers, etc). So it pains me to put something negative on this message board. But, I felt compelled to be brutally honest.

This is not to say I won't listen to it. I will probably wear it out for the rest of the week. And I am very much looking forward to hearing the rest of what he has been up to.

Having said (er...typed) all that...let the flaming begin... cry

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and I'm glad you signed up and shared yours.

It's funny... this song for me, in a lot of ways, brings back that feeling I got from the 1995 record. Sure, it's not loaded with electronics and samples, but I don't think Kevin is that person anymore... then again, I could be wrong, as I have no idea what he's got up his sleeve, and one of the greatest things about him are his many different musical sides.

For what it is, I think "Runaway Brain" is quite an amazing track. To hear him bring on the rage/passion like he is, even still, is mind blowing for me. I figured after "ThinKing" the aggro may be gone, but clearly I was wrong, and I'm glad I was!

very astute post, sewn. thanks for saying all you did. i could not agree with you more. very glad you managed to find that article where he mentions (sic) for the first time, as well. rob & i only found that for the first time a few weeks back & were also highly amused when this track appeared under this name.

personally i think this song is fantastic. i love the cold brutality of it, but also how angry kevin is at the situation at large right now in this country. his point of view is as ever comical and biting. i too love how punk this feels and am very interested in hearing what's to come. if we know kevin, it's probably quite different from this track too. his records have such a massive variance in styles and ideas.

Wow. This song is sure an interesting departure from the earlier work I've heard. I can't help to make some Electric Eels comparison here, maybe to Kevin's dismay. I like it though, I don't believe that people have to stick to one style which they're best known for. He's always been such an interesting artist and I'm curious to see any follow-up material.

I have to agree with Rob. In some ways, this reminds me of a more crude, political "Crack". It's actually less vague, lyrically, than the whole "Prick" album, but still very interesting.
I read somewhere (maybe on Kevin's Echoing the Sound thread) that someone felt his screaming kinda forced, but I definitely don't feel the same. It has that natural anger of Kevin's which I so adore - more like "loud/exploding feelings" than "trying to make 'heavy music'". So, yeah, I'm really liking it. I don't intend to listen to it very much though. I don't feel like spoiling the upcoming cd as I did with so many others (that is, of course, if there's REALLY a cd coming out anytime soon).

Anyways, I apologize for any grammar mistakes - I'm actually from Brasil. And also: hello to everyone! (I don't think this is the right place to say "hello", but since I'm already here and this is my first post...)
